7 ways to help your dog through fireworks season

The period around bonfire night can be stressful for dog owners and dogs alike, with fireworks seeming to be let off earlier and earlier every year. Even the calmest of dogs can get frightened by the loud whizz and bangs, but there are steps owners can take to minimise the impact on their dogs.

1. Try and tire your dog out before dark
At this time of year try and take your dog for a nice long walk well before dark so they are tired when it gets dark. If your dog is particularly scared of fireworks, you may want to feed them early as this makes them feel sleepy as well. 

2. Give your dog “safe places to hide” from fireworks

Let your dog settle where they are happiest – they often like to be covered if scared. If your dog has a crate and is happy maybe cover the crate with a blanket – remember to leave the crate open. Maybe a table covered with a blanket – give your dog options so they can choose where to hide.

3. Mask the sudden bang of fireworks by keeping a radio or TV on

Classical music has been found to help keep dogs calm, but any music or the TV can help distract your dogs from the sudden loud bangs.

4. Draw your curtains early minimise the lights from the fireworks

Closing the curtains and leaving lights on in the house can reduce the impact of the flashes fireworks create.

5. Don’t confine your dog – let them to one room as they may hurt themselves trying to get out, particularly if they become stressed

Let your dog find where they are most comfortable and then add things such as music and lights in that room.

6. Keep your dog occupied

Provide your dog with a long-lasting chew to help keep them distracted during the fireworks.

7. If your dog is still extremely stressed by fireworks, you may want to consult your vet

If your dog is very stressed your vet may be able to provide medication to help reduce their anxiety.
